In early March, everything was going right for MaKenna Lehmann.

While maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, she was leading Hagerty's girls lacrosse team to unprecedented success.

"The best season in school history," coach Mitch Whittington said. "Won the SAC [Seminole Athletic Conference], number one seed in our district and she was a big part of that."

Until March 10th, when MaKenna suffered a devastating knee injury.

“I got the MRI and they came back and said it was a tear and so then it was kind of like, 'Wow, it’s over',” Lehmann said.

Exactly three weeks after suffering what she thought was a career ending injury, Lehmann was back on the field. She received clearance from her doctors and parents to play one final game - Senior Night against East River.

While wearing a brace, she found an opening in front of the net and scored the most memorable goal of her life.

“They developed a play around me basically where I run in circles until I’m open for the ball and they pass it to me and then I scored,” she said. “I was just so happy. There’s no other word besides happy.”

Hagerty's academic awards ceremony Monday provided another reason for MaKenna to smile.

Just four days after ACL surgery, MaKenna was surprised to learn she was the Central Florida female recipient of the Spectrum Sports Scholarship.

“It just really amazes me that I would win over so many other people,” she said.

MaKenna was one of 145 female applicants for the award. Students must have a 3.5 grade point average, submit two letters of reccomendation and an essay in order to be considered for the scholarship. The four winners, a male and female in both Central Florida and Tampa Bay, receive a one time award of $2,500.

In addition to four years as a lacrosse player, MaKenna also ran cross country and made numerous contributions to Hagerty and the Oviedo community.

“When you look for leadership, that’s what you want. You want someone who is going to be the first there, last to leave and she did that in both aspects, the true definition of a student athlete,” Whittington said.

MaKenna plans to study biomedical engineering at the University of Florida.
