There's a mystery if you head to a portion of Cape Canaveral Beach.

  • Mangrove tree washed ashore in Cape Canaveral
  • Unclear where 'Castaway Tree' came from
  • Beachgoers hanging items on the branches

A large mangrove tree recently washed up, sitting in the middle of the sand at the Harding Avenue beach access.

It gives the illusion it's rooted — and growing.

The mysterious tree was first spotted a couple of weeks ago after Hurricane Maria, and it's since become quite the tourist attraction.

Beachgoers are hanging coconuts, seashells, bracelets, and other knick knacks on its branches.

Dennis Bertoli and his wife live nearby and have named it the "Castaway Tree."

"It could be from Puerto Rico, it could be from the Keys," said Bertoli, who found the tree. "It could be from a mile that way, but who cares? It's cool!"

There is no word yet if the tree will stay or if officials will remove it.
