Normally we feature just one Everyday Hero.

This week we're featuring two deserving of the honor for their extreme generosity and their passion for helping to feed struggling families.

For Chris and David Hicks, Tuesday evenings on a small field next to a supermarket parking lot in Ruskin began about a year and a half ago when they brought one pizza to see if there were hungry people in the area.

"Just handing out pizzas to people walking by if they needed a meal," said David Hicks. "Next week it went to 10 pizzas and then 15 pizzas. Then we realized we were on to something."

Married for 40 years, Chris and David along with volunteers including members of the Meet Me in the Street Ministry now serve up hot home cooked meals with all the fixings.

All are welcome. And the work doesn't end here.

"This is the first part of the ministry," Chris Hicks said. "The second part, the same night, we leave here and we go to a migrant camp and provide meals for about 40 plus kids every single Tuesday night."

Each Tuesday in this parking lot in Ruskin, those in need of a meal can find one.

Making ends meet is a daily challenge and community support is key.

"We have people just drive up and say, 'Hey, I’ve been reading about you and I'd like to donate some things,'" David Hicks said.

Clothing and other items are also available. And an annual Christmas party shares the spirit of the season.

But Chris and David feel the most important thing they do is listen.

"Someone said to us years and years and years ago, I love you guys because you talk to me."

Talking and listening to those who, too often, people try to avoid.

"If we would all take, just take action to make someone else live a little better, we’d just be making our community better," Chris Davis said.
