The police chief in Longboat Key released more details about a double murder in which an arrest was made Wednesday.

Darryl Hanna Jr., 29, is charged with the slayings of Kevin Carter, 51, and Timothy Hurley, 59, at the Zota Beach Resort on Aug. 4.

Officers responded to a robbery report around 3 a.m. at the resort, located on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Police Chief Pete Cumming said Thursday he does not believe the incident was intended to be just a robbery.

"There is no reason to commit murder if the intent was strictly robbery," he said.

Hanna worked as a security guard for the resort just two days prior to the slayings.

The security company Hanna worked for asked him to come to work the night of the slayings, but Hanna said he had a new job. Police said they do not know why Hanna walked into the hotel with the intent to kill.

"There seems to be some disgruntled nature, something that occurred," said Cumming.

As Hanna made his first appearance in court Thursday, loved ones of the victims sat in the courtroom.

"The man has no soul in his eyes. He really doesn't," said Kevin Carter's domestic partner, Thomas Swigeart.

Swigeart said he spent the last 24 years with Carter.

"(At) 10:30 he got dressed for work, we hugged, we kissed, we said I love you, and said I'll see you in the morning. That's the last I ever saw of him," Swigeart said.

"I keep waiting on him to go home, I keep waiting on the door to open," Swigeart said of Carter. "I’m even waiting and sitting up at the time he comes home in the morning."

Thomas said he still has not wrapped his head around this tragedy. He said he felt some relief knowing the accused killer has been caught.

Hanna is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and is currently being held at the Manatee County Jail on no bond.
