A Hernando County surgeon is back home after his third volunteer trip to India to share his knowledge with fellow medical professionals.

  • Face of healthcare changing in India, surrounding nations

Board certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Jason is a Harvard and Colombia Alumnus. He has a private practice in Brooksville.

Over the past three years he’s been taking his knowledge to India.

“When I first went there three years ago they estimated 5 percent of people had health insurance," said Jason. "It's mostly private pay, and in three years 20 percent now have health insurance."

Jason just got back from Jaipur, where he described witnessing healthcare in India evolve.

“It's all changing, and some of the hospitals are getting bigger," Jason explained. "But the need is big because a billion in a half people just in India -- not including the surrounding countries there -- have had very little access to healthcare and very little faith in it."

While in India, Jason was a key note speaker, attended multiple conferences in different cities, gave lectures, and preformed surgeries.

“They have patients who have been screened and volunteered, they wanted to have an American surgeon operating on them,” said Jason. “So I did live surgeries that were broadcast while answering questions."

His wife Rebecca proudly watched Jason's work from back home.

“It's amazing when you see the banners and hear the stories about people lining up, one patient wanted him to do his other knee, the stories are just unbelievable," said Rebecca.

Jason said he plans to return next year.
