Many families are likely licking their wounds following the Thanksgiving Holiday road trip.

The highway can bring out the best and the worst in all of us. Throw in kids and the family pets, and the stress can make even the most calm person crazy.

Chevrolet recently published the results of its Holiday Travel Survey, and the results may be surprising.

For example, while most would assume traveling with children to be at the top of the stress list, the survey discovered 75 percent of Florida parents say their children are involved in road trip planning.

Also, about 74 percent of holiday drivers take Fido along for the drive.

In-car technology is key to making the drive safer and keeping the kids engaged. Ninety-two percent of Florida parents use video screens, tablets or other mobile devices to get directions, check the weather and entertain their children.  The typical Florida driver's road trip includes more devices (7.8) then the U.S. average overall (6.6).

Courtney Green's SUV is a prime example.

"It helps immensely because there are two TVs in there," she said. "The girls can watch something different than the boys. Everyone can stay happy."

Parents also indicated to Chevrolet researchers they'd consider much longer road trips in vehicles equipped with Wi-Fi.

Green says a successful road trip with the family involves advance planning. Find interesting and fun places to stop along the route -- things the whole family will enjoy.

"I would say the key is to travel frequently with your children. Don't make it an odd thing for them," Green said. "I think when it's unexpected or something they're not used to, it makes it harder.
