A Bay Area man has become one of the top artists in Christian hip hop music.

Kevin Burgess, who goes by KB has best selling CDs and music videos with millions of views. He was one of the performers on the annual "Winter Jam" nationwide tour that sells hundreds of thousands of tickets.

KB went through some tough times on his road to his fame. His stepfather left home never to return when he was a child and he later found out what happened to his biological father who he never met.

"I found out a couple of years ago that my biological father was actually killed in a drug deal," he said.

KB said he was doing well in high school but he felt adrift without a father in his life. That's when a friend gave him a Christian rap CD.

"I thought Christian and rap together, Christian and rap, crap so I didn't want anything to do with it," Burgess said.

However, he listened to the CD and loved it. One of the songs had a profound impact on his way of thinking. He felt a calling to the music.

KB is married to his wife Michelle and has two young sons. He wants to make sure they have the father figure he missed out on growing up in South St. Petersburg.

"I am committed to one woman. I am committed to my responsibilities. I am committed to be the type of husband and father that I want my children to one day be," Burgess said.

KB is taking a long view on what constitutes success in life.

"As one of my favorite writers said, the best eulogy one can have is a life of character. The thing that goes beyond the grave is who you actually were," he said.

KB is currently on tour with his Reach Records label mate Trip Lee and he has a newly released CD titled "Today We Rebel."
