It's out with the old and in with the new in the Channelside District.

  • Space to be used for new waterfront park
  • Park will be part of Water Street Tampa redevelopment
  • Park expected to be open early 2018

On Wednesday morning, crews started demolition on the southwest wing of the Channelside Bay Plaza. The space will be used for a new waterfront park.

"It will be great green-space, but it will also have some temporary pop-up retail", said Ali Glisson, Vice President of Marketing for Strategic Property Partners. "We want to have lots of things here people have not seen before. Something new to keep them coming back."

The new park will be part of the new Water Street Tampa redevelopment project, a joint $3 billion venture between Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and Microsoft's Bill Gates. Construction begins next year on condos, hotels, restaurants and public spaces.

Work has already begun USF's Morsani Medical School.

The waterfront park is expected to be open to the public early next year.
